As the 22nd FIFA World Cup, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be contested by the men's national teams of FIFA's member associations. The event will be held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022. This will be the first World Cup held in the Arab world and the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
For the 2026 tournament, the field will increase from 32 to 48 teams. A total of eight venues will host matches across five cities at the event. After defeating Croatia 4–2 in last year's FIFA World Cup final, France is the defending champions. As a result of Qatar's intense summer heat and humidity, this World Cup will be held in November and December, making it the first tournament not held in May, June, or July, or in the northern winter. At Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor, Qatar will play Ecuador in the opening match. Qatar's National Day will be celebrated on 18 December 2022, the day of the final.
